Can someone tell me or point me to list of the pros and cons of the 3000GT (1997 and newer)? I'm investigating this for a co-worker (single female). I'd like to know of any chronic problems and/or model specific problems (especially the high $ ones).

Are there any year/models that you would definitely avoid or definitely want to buy?

I looked in some of the forums already and didn't get a comprehensive answer.

TIA

If she is looking for a '97 or newer, most of the bugs have been worked out. There are currently issues with the transfer case on AWD models but those stem to the first generation, 91-93. On the 1G models also, they had an 18 spline output shaft which would shear off pretty easily creating many problems. In 94, they switched to a 25 spline output shaft which is markedly better.

The transmission has always been considered a weak point of these cars but if driven responsibly, they can last you quite a long time. High RPM clutch dumps will kill it.

The '97s and up came in 3 different trim levels.

BASE- SOHC 3.0L engine 167 HP (Performance is lacking-Still a beautiful car though-Front Wheel Drive)
SL - DOHC 3.0L engine 222HP (Decent performance and a great all around sports car-Front Wheel Drive)
VR4-DOHC 3.0L Twin Turbo Engine 320 HP (This is the bad boy of the group. King of the street. All Wheel Drive)

I guess it all comes out on preference also. Do you know if she plans on keeping it stock or modifying it? Is she looking for speed or reliability?

Thanks, that's just the kind of feedback I was looking for. I think she's mostly interested in reliability and the sporty look of the car. Speed is always good though. I doubt very seriously that she will modify the car at all.

Glad to help.

IMO then, the SL would be the way to go. Repairs will be less costly as they don't have all of the turbo equipment which could have issues and it will still have enough speed to to make her driving experience a great one.

Let us know if you or she has anymore questions.

IMO body styling is unmatched for the $$$$. With proper maintenance and proper care there is no telling how long the car will hold up. Resale is also good.

The only issues on a newer vehicle, besides what has already been mentioned above is the 60,000 mile and 120,000 mile service. I assume she will pay for these to be done. That is about the only other thing I can think of.

Good one detpac. These are scheduled maintenance items that "must" be done. The dealer will charge you right around a grand for parts and labor. You can get out of it though by looking for all of the parts yourself and then paying them for the labor.

Don't just let any Manny, Moe, or Jack do this either. It's best done by somebody with experience or by Mitsubishi.
