Your fuel map is designed around premium octane fuel. Deviating from that can affect gas mileage and how well our vehicle runs. So the short answer is yes your friend is right.

He's dead on...IIRC [it's been years since I had my manual out of the glove box] it needs 91-92 bare minimum. Go with the peace of mind and stay with the good stuff [whatever's labeled premium]. Your car will thank you.
