cold air box

what exactly is a cold air box. i know it is a way to bring in cooler air but how does it work and how much are they. also is this the best way to bring in cold air.

ok i was looking through the 3si forum and some people were using supermacs cold air box and some were running a large diameter hose from the front of the car low to the ground up to the air filter. how about doing both?

It would work better. More cold air.
