View Full Version : Boosting Q?

Ok, yesterday I decided to change my spark plug gap from .04 or so to .032". So I did that. I took the car out, & only got 10-11 psi. Boost leak was my first thought. The rear IC pipe didn't want to go on right, so that was my first suspect. Too dark to work on it so I wait until today. Took off the rear IC pipe & put it back on. I also got my torque-max Y-pipe from the ups guy today so I put that on as well. Took it out for a spin & now I'm overboosting???? I hit 18-19 psi pretty easily. I pulled over & checked my MBC hoses & everything looks alright there. Is it possible that I had that big of a leak with the factory y-pipe & now I need to readjust my MBC? Or do you think I have a hose off somewhere. Oh ya, I got on it again just to verify it wasn't a freak of some kind, and I hit 16-17psi again, this time it hesitated at that mark, at that point I backed off.
mods: was running 14psi reliably prior to this, gutted precats, test pipe, mbc, 9bs, factory fuel system

ok, backed off my MBC today by 2 turns & boosting is right now. I guess that my rubber piece for the y-pipe was in worse shape than I thought.

Dynamic Racing offers a y-pipe that will not come off at all. Have you checked that one out?

The Torque-Max Y-pipe I put on there was basically a lower cost version of the one Dynamic sells. As it turns out, I must've had quite a boost leak where the y-pipe fits onto the throttle body. A few others have reported having to turn their boost down after replacing the y-pipe for a metal one. Once I backed it down, the car ran great.

so how many pounds are you boosting now?

Is 14psi safe for the Turbo w/o any internal mods? What's the highest you should go and be reliable?

14-15 psi is the highest you wanna go on the factory fuel system.

Ok.... So let's say w/ a standalone? How much can the stock turbo's handle if they're in pretty descent condition, and keep it daily driveable. I mean, I'm sure you can hit a couple of runs at about 20-22 psi and not kill them, but doing it every day all day will they blow soon? My pal's 94 Supra can handle 18-20 psi daily and has had no fuel management upgrades etc. His turbo's are still in wonderful condition, his piston compression test was perfect after 7 mo's of driving it in this condition. The reason I'm asking is I know that different cars have different capabilities. The Supra has extremely strong turbo's, strong internals but a weak fuel management system. The MR2 has strong fuel management, strong internals but the CT-26 turbo isn't that good for much above 16 psi. And last but not least... the RX-7 can't handle much w/o someone following it w/ a bucket to pick up the parts that fall off. Sorry for being so inquisitive, I'm trying to pick up as much information about the 3KGT as possible. In about 6 months I'll be picking up a new car (Supra or 3KGT) and would like to know what I'm getting into as far as reliability issues. Thanks for your time fellas (and ladies :) ).

Supra's fuel system is better than ours stock. Our cars have strong engines. Our fuel system and tranny's suck. To push your car a fuel system upgrade needs to happen. You can push the turbos but most people will tell you, you dont need to go above14 - 15 until you get a fuel system.

yup, I agree, don't go over 15 psi until you have upgraded fuel pump/injectors/controller.
even then, I think you shouldn't run over about 18 psi unless you have propane or race gas, but I could be off on that #
I will be setting my MBC to 1 bar = 14.5 psi

Actually this is where you do conversions

Any conversion you want.

Thanks for the fuel question answers fellas. I appreciate your time. As far as the AWD and AWS systems go. How reliable and strong are they? Can the diff's handle gobs of power? Or should they be upgraded also? Here's my goal w/ the information you guys have give me so far if I decide to go w/ a 3KGT...
475 - 500 RWHP
* Upgraded fuel pump
* Upgraded fuel rail and injectors
* Possibly a standalone EMS or Apexi S-AFC for A/F management and maybe a piggyback of some other sort for ignition and timing.
* Cat-back exhaust (most likely custom single-exit)
* Custom front mount intercooler and piping
* Changed intercooler to turbo pipe (I've heard these have problems w/ cracking and don't last long over about 10psi)
* I'd like to keep the stock BOV as I know that OEM BOV's are usually the most reliable (How much boos is the stock OEM BOV good for?)
* Tial wastegate
* Metal head-gasket
If there's anything else or any other subjects you guys would like to touch on, feel free. I'm mostly a newbie to the 3KGT and have loved it for years. Unfortunately until recently, my budget has only allowed me to drive turbo MR2's. I love them but would like a toy and will then use my current MR2 as a daily driver. Again, thanks for all your input people. I really do appreciate it.

475 - 500 RWHP
* Upgraded fuel pump -------------------------------------------------Definitely
* Upgraded fuel rail and injectors -----------------------------------Not so much the rails but injectors yes. Also a larger fuel rail connector.
* Possibly a standalone EMS or Apexi S-AFC for A/F management and maybe a piggyback of some other sort for ignition and timing. ------------------------Go for it.
* Cat-back exhaust (most likely custom single-exit) ------------Definitely
* Custom front mount intercooler and piping --------------------Alot of debate over this one. Looks good and helps with boost a little. Why not.
* Changed intercooler to turbo pipe (I've heard these have problems w/ cracking and don't last long over about 10psi) ------------------------------------Y-pipe? Yes. Not cracking but blowing off with higher boost.
* I'd like to keep the stock BOV as I know that OEM BOV's are usually the most reliable (How much boos is the stock OEM BOV good for?)------------Change to better BOV. Greddy has a good one. Stock cant hold much boost for very long.
* Tial wastegate------------------------------------------------------------With bigger turbos might be good. Not much need for tem in good turbos most people get.
* Metal head-gasket -------------------------------------------------------????
If there's anything else or any other subjects you guys would like to touch on, feel free.
------------- Try to get Stage 2 or 3 heads and balance and blueprinting of the block.
------------- Always remember to get the 25 spline tranny and transfer case. With that much power, the 18 spline tranny will not hold. Trust me. The AWS will handle it.

You're very informative detpac, I appreciate it. Seems there's only like 3-4 really active members on this board.

How about reliabilty on 94+ models, if I were to pick up one w/ mileage ranging from 70k to 80k, what can I expect as far as changing bad parts etc. I have considered my past posted goal of approx 500RWHP and found it to bee too expensive. If I decide to go w/ pure power, I'll go w/ a Supra because of known reliability and easy mods that don't cost a ton. As far as I can see w/ 3KGT, a lot of the aftermarket mods are overpriced, probably due to a smaller and more exclusive market. The mods needed to reach my goal seem to be a little more than I wanted to get into also. I don't necessarily want to change the turbo's either. If I go w/ the 3KGT, it will be purely reliability in a daily driveable car. Maybe closer to 350RWHP sounds more realistic. I have to also take into consideration that it'll be driving in the snow all winter, alongside my MR2 ;) I have loved the looks of a stock 3KGT ever since it's debut, and every day that goes by it's harder and harder to choose. Too bad hollywood got ahold of the Supra, I hate the F & F scene. It may be enough to make me choose the mitsu.... ;)

In the snow, Mitsu and Dodge rule the streets. AWD --- Nuff said. With the mileage you are looking at, approx 40 - 50 thousand more miles before 120,000 mile service. 350 HP is easy and affordable.
You would kill anything on the road in the snow and rain and ice and dirt and etc.
