I was just wondering how hard it is to gut the precats, and also if i gut the pre cats will i still pass inspection with just the cat?

Even if you do have precats, it may not be worth all of the time and trouble of going through it, unless you have done many mods to the car. You probably wouldn't notice a big difference, or possibly a loss on a stock car.

Yes, with precats gutted, if you get the car good and hot so it heats up the main cat, it will pass inspection.

As far as mods go, i have intake, and almost full exhaust(i have a custom cat back, testpipe right now) What is the deal with the cali spec dn pipe as aposed to the fed spec? I was told i need the calis cpec cause i have precats? Is this true or BS?

I've tried to search for the answer but can't find an honest answer. 3Si is running like Sh**. Slow as hell. I will keep searching though. I will let you know what I find out.

well im not posative.. but ive seen it done and it seemed to work.. My friend has a 96 eclipse and he decided to gut the cat. What he did was he removed it and filled it with gas and lit thething on fire. HAHA no joke. Now i dont know if this is thebest idea. but it seemed to work. He said when its on fire it burns off all of the charcoal and catalysts. Dont take my word please, lol just a suggestion..?

Safety Edit
Using gasoline in this manor will only get you burnt or killed

The N/As do not have precats. Downpipe->Cat->Pre-Mufflers->Muffler.

The California spec Downpipe has more restriction, because California cars have something similar to a pre-cat and DN made their design specially for it to be compatible with the California cars.

My car is a 99 base model 3KGT. It has precats. Trust me. I look at those things all the time wanting to gut them. Just haven't gotten around to it.

I think the OBD-II N/A cars and OBD-I California N/A cars have them, but the Federal OBD-I N/A cars do not.

An air chisel, hammer drill and screw driver hammer combo is the way to go. Better yet lure a friend to do them for you.

The catalyst won't burn off it is designed to reach a high temp and burn extra fuel that makes it down your exhaust. One of the catalysts is palladium which has a melting point of 1552 °C. The melting point of iron is 1535 º C. The exhuast will turn to a puddle before the catalyst.

Using gasoline in this manor will only get you burnt or killed

Only the California edition cars, (I guess that's what they're called...) right? I am 95% positive on www.stealth316.com the diagram of the N/A exhaust systems does not have a pre-cat.

SOme 94-95 NA's have pre cats too. My 94 has them. My 95 parts car I had did not though. And 97300 you do need a Cali-spec downpipe. The downpipes are different because of the pre cats.

Read the thread. It's been answered in case your questioning it as well.

No not questioning it. I read the thread and somehow forgot someone mentioned that some NA's prior to 96 had them.
