Kenwood makes a really good one. I installed one in a friend's 350z and it is quite impressive. It was a pain to work around the parking-brake indication signal that keeps it from working while the car is in motion...

just hook it to a body ground. that is all the parking brake indicator is for the DVD units.
Eclipse makes an awesome 8V in dash DVD. they have just come out with some new models that offer touch screen and built in hard drives for better DVD playback. Alpine makes a nice one too as does Clarion. The new Clarions are pretty damn kewl.
I used to be a big fan of Kenwood until I heard my 900.00 Excelon HU next to a 400.00 Eclipse and realized how shitty they sound.
If you want a quality in dash DVD, they will be at least a grand. You can get cheaper ones, but the quality is going to suck balls.
If you are looking for a DVD setup for something like a minivan, you can get those much cheaper, but it's not an in dash flip up screen. I think the local car audio shop that I use sells the whole setup for around 800.00 installed.

My friend's Kenwood was more than that... If I remember right, I had to hook it to an always-on source restricted to 5v, then had to have a ground to some funk-tacularly oddly labled wire lead...

the always on 5V may have been for something else unless he had some goofy car. i'd bet 100.00 that you could have bypassed all of it and just screwed the lead to a body ground somewhere. I've done Kenwood, Alpine, Pioneer, Clarion and Eclipse DVD installs and they all just ground to the body. Particular cars have weird parking brake wirings that will require you to use some weird device to allow that part to work properly if you want to use that feature (supposedly the law in most states that it can't work unless the parking brake is on). Every in-dash I have installed said the same thing for that lead, but I have just grounded them all to the body...works just fine. I think they have you jump through these hoops so you don't think it's possible to ground the lead and it will work...they want you to see it as necessary. it's their way of skating liability if someone is watching porn and crashes into an 80 year old lady crossing the road.

speaking of flip up screens. Is it possible to remove the center gauges on the dash, and install the pioneer avic-n1 dvd navigation system to replace it.

anything is possible...however, there is no room back there and you are talking extensive work to make it look decent. no clue why you would want to remove gauges...the goal is to gain information in the driver's seat, not lose information. why not just put it in the stock location or add a second monitor for your navigation? any in-dash DVD HU that is worth anything will have multi-inputs for things like cameras, video games and navigation that you can map to different monitors to watch different inputs at the same time.

Thank you for your reply stealthawd! You are the first one to actually reply to this question because I have asked this same question in many different forums and no one ever replies. Anyway, the reason why I want to remove the center gauges and replace that space with the pioneer avic n1 system is because I want to install it in a place where I can see while driving (at eye level). I don't wanna place in front of the stereo because I don't want to look down while driving just to get directions from the navigation. So far, the pioneer avic-n1 is the best dvd navigation out in the market. It even has a lateral G-meter!

I was originally thinking of putting mine where my center vents are. That is a lot more feasible and much easier to modify to make it work. You will have to remove the dash to cut away the duct work and plug it off, but there should be enough room back there to make it happen in addition to you are working with a rectangular opening rather than three circular openings.
That's only a 2V HU...meaning it is going to sound like pooh. I know I always harp on Eclipse...but check out their DVD HU's with the navigation, particularly the AV8533. That is the newer model of the HU I am running in my car. 8V preamp section to a set of nice amps powering quality speakers and you are talking surround sound in you car that will rival any high end theater system. The new ones actually have hard drives built in to the separate control unit that stores all of your maps as well as MP3's, video or whatever you put in there. Also has a higher voltage pre-amp section so they sound much MUCH better. It also has speech for the navigation so you don't have to watch it. Basically, it lowers the music and tells you that you have a turn coming up. Then it mutes the system and tells you to turn.
I have always heard the interface with the Pioneer units is pretty cool though. That Pioneer HU has a kewl look to it too. Definitely shop around and compare. I know Clarion makes an awesome equivalent to that Pioneer as does Alpine. Just check out all of the features.

not all..... my alpine wants to see a swithed 12v reference before it see's and keeps the ground, as in you press and hold the brake pedal (supply 12v to head unit from brake switch) then pull up and leave up the ebrake (supply's ground to unit) then release the brake pedal (12v ref. turned off) it will work as long as the ground is supplied and acc power is not shut off to the unit
it is possible to bypass any of them though as I have hooked up toggles on mine so I can simulate the signals it wants as I am driving along;)

I am assuming you mean the center vents and yes it can and has been done, infact I make somehting for it. You will have to cut out a small support from the middle of the ducting, and use a heat gun to expand them to accomodate the stereo, also be sure to use some duct tape to block of the vents.
As for the kenwood, I installed one only a couple months ago, just had to ground the parking brake wire, nothing weird like that. ON the old alpines you had to have one wire switched to +12v ignintion and have a another wire to ground so it looked like you had the parking brake on and hit the foot brake before the screen would work, but even at that its no big deal to do.
