What was everyones idolized or favorite car(s) growing up?

My first was in the early 90's, I thought the 5.0s with the ground effect (not sure what they are officially called) packages were the best thing ever (yeah, yeah, i know) Its funny how your taste changes over time... now I think they are uglier then sin. I drooled over them for a while, then got into 300z's. Through middle school and High school that was my favorite car, and I told everyone I would get one someday, I swore to it! I thought the 3000gt was also goregous but I always thought of it as a "supercar" (supercar looks) and never thought I could really afford one, so I never really looked into it. I think I remember seeing one stealth in like 4 years back then also, and I never saw one close up. After I wrecked my Trans Am, I was determined to get the Z i wanted, and i had the cash in hand and ready to buy but somebody bought it 2 hours earlier.. and the dickhead salesman told me he had it on *reserve* for me. Anyways, I went to the next lot over, spotted the stealth and fell in LOVE. Of course before I bought I went online and looked up all the specs/etc and figured it was almost based on the same powerplant as the n/a Z.. 222hp/v6/3.0 except for the weight difference and fwd. The looks alone are basically what sold me the car, though. Since then I see stealths A LOT more often now.. and my appreciation for them is even greater.

err. so anyways what was everyones idolized or favorite car(s) growing up?

Like you Gabe, when I was younger, I also loved the Mustang 5.0. That thing was absolutely awesome. I always swore that I would get one also, and like you, times and tastes change.

One evening in 1983, I was 14 years old, sitting on the couch watching Silver Spoons, a commercial came on. Before my eyes was the most beautiful car I had ever seen in my life. I had seen this car many times before and always thought they were pretty nice but this redesigned car took my breath away. I sat there glued to the tv. My eyes were wide open. Top eyelid was on my forehead and my bottom eyelid was touching my lip. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Digital dash, a stereo system that would rock the neighborhood, the smooth lines and curved body. I was in awe. It was the 1984 Chevrolet Corvette.

At that moment, my life changed. All I could think about was that car. I yelled at my mom and dad to come see, but it was already too late. I couldn't speak during that commercial and so they missed it. I bugged the hell out of them for weeks to buy me one, not that I could drive it, but hey, I was a kid.

I made a promise to myself then that one day, I would own a brand new Corvette before I turned 25 years old. It couldn't be a used one. No, that would not do. It had to be fresh off the lot and top of the line.

When I turned 23ish, I realized that my promise would probably not be coming true within the next two years so I rewrote my contract with myself and promised that I would have one before I turn 50. I have just over 16 years left to make this dream come to fruition.

Yes, I will still have one. My love affair with the epitomy of the Great American Sports Car has not faded one bit.

I, like you two, was lovin' the 5.0 Mustangs. I lso loved two others back then, the Supra TT (around '89-'90) and I have always loved the Porsche 911s. I can't remember when I started liking them, but it has been as long as I remember. But I'm very happy with my 3000GT, I just can't wait to get it back.
