I saw one yesterday with a hard drive but they wanted $1900 clams for it.

Yeah fucken right.

Also saw a Kenwood that was priced right at about $389 but no HD.

Any reccomendations on a decently priced stereo with a HD that won't break my ass in the process?

Fuck a HD. As long as your receiver can play mp3 files, you could burn 650 mb or so worth of mp3s onto one CD. That'll make you happy for hours.

So do you think that the HD is kind of an overrated feature? I just like the idea of having an entire CD collection stored in your stereo.

At this point, yes. Maybe when they become cheaper but I'd say just go with a unit that can play MP3s. I have the Kenwood X959 and it's AWESOME.
