View Full Version : Hesitation Problems

My car hesitates constantly now. Not sure why. Initially I thought it was my wires/plugs. I replaced them. Then I figured it was my MAS. I replaced that. Now the hesitation problem seems to have gotten worse.
It is at it's worst when I starting it cold. I press the accellerator and it just sputters, once I release, then it moves, I press again and sputter. I have to go through this for a while until my temp gauge is at about 2 lines up. After that, when I go WOT, I don't feel the power that I should probably until about 5000rpms.
My injectors are clean and I just replaced/rebuilt everything. New valves, new lifters, the works. I got a new fuel pump.
Does anybody know what could be the problem here? It is almost time for the NG and I don't want this to be a problem.

Well, I replaced my fuel filter and that didn't do the trick so I brought it into the shop and found out that my timing belt was loose. The tensioner pulley was the reason for this.
Last time my car went down because the timing skipped two teeth, the problem was the tensioner.
So this time, I am going to replace it and see how that works. I will know later this evening.

Replaced the tensioner and then the car ran pretty well. Pulled it out of the bay, backed it up, and parked. Went back out to the car and it wouldn't start. Goddammit. I opened up the hood and checked to make sure everything was connected. Yup.
Took off the timing belt cover and the front set of cams were dead on. Took off the rear cover and the cam had already slipped like 15 or 17 teeth. The belt was on nice and tight so how can this happen?
There was no oil or water on the cams to allow the belt to slip. We cranked the cam and could watch the timing belt jump over 1 or 2 teeth at a time.
Waiting for a new belt now. Don't understand though. The belt on there now is brand new. Only 2000 miles old and OEM. WTF?

Are your sure that you are tensioning the belt properly per the manual?? Do you have the special tool used to do this? Other wise you can get one from 3S Performance for about $20.00.
When you go thru it again make sure that there are no problems with the cams and value train. Make sure that when you are setting the cam timing that the cams don't jump the belt, they have a tendency to do that unless you clamp the belt to the cam gears(see ref to URL below). THe reason they do this is because of the valve springs are pushing on the cam lobes. Also note that the tensioner mounts on a bracket that is free to rotate on its mounting bolt. On my car when I did the timing belt, I noticed that this bracket did not rotate freely, it was binding on dried up grease and some rust. I had to take the bolt out to clean it and the bearing surface in the bracket, then re-gease it (I use mobil one synthetic on just about everything). Maybe, if this was the problem, the tensioner might not be adjusting properly(long shot). You could also have a bad tensioner, ....... but make sure you are tensioning the belt properly!!!!! FYI, if you need it, a detailed guide can be found at :

Hope this helps.
