View Full Version : What can I do to for my N/A

This is probably one of the most popular questions out there. Many different things can be done to your car to increase the HP output.
I will start with the basics and include my estimated HP output. Correct me if I am wrong. I am just going off of what I have read. No dyno numbers here.
First you need to free up your airflow. Most of these are just bolt on mods.
Open element Intake +6hp $70-$150
DownPipe +???hp $???????
Test Pipe or High flow cat +8hp $30(TP) $100-$150 (HFC)
Catback Exhaust +10hp $400-$1500

Next, I would suggest you move to your drivetrain. Not all of these will give you added HP but may assist you in not losing so much HP given your drivetrain loss.
Lightened Flywheel $300-$500
Stage II or III clutch $350-$500
These would be for a manual transmission.

who makes downpipes for the n/a dohc?
mongorunner
- June 17th, 2002, 08:36 PM
"e2kmf" manufactured them i think
they sell them on the http://3sxperformance.com/exhaust.asp
supposedly 13 HP dyno testedhttp://www.us3s.com/freeforum/images/icons/icon14.gif
i made a bitchin list one time i deleted it but here is about how it goes
intake
headers(soon to be out i believe)
DP
test pipe
exhaust
UD pulley
camgears
SAFC
VR-4 injectors
VR-4 pump
clutch
flywheel
LSD
port job
cams
rods
pistons
high rev valve springs
plugs
wires
spark boost
bored throttle body
and a two hunert shot of NAAAWWWSSS:D
anymore you guys can think of?!
EDIT: that will prolly run someone around $10k, but(correct me if im wrong) you would be making somewhere in the ball park of about 350HP at the Flywheel (properly turned)

dnp downpipes, for now, are only being made for cali emissions. I'm getting DNP to make me one specific for NY emisssions too. I don't know about the other states...but CA and NY are supposedly the toughest on emmisions.

Moongorunner made a great list. Once you get your intake and exhaust freed up, your biggest gains will come from a compression increase, larger valves, and hotter cams. Your looking at a $1400-2000, depending on the valvetrain setup you go with, but you can expect to get 270 plus from this.

Hi guys, I just wanted to shead some light on this topic. The UDP is only $199 :D Well, at least on our site it is. Also, an RPS Stage 2 ( Maxx series w/ street disc) with a fidanza Alum. flywheel is probably thebest mod for the n/a cars right now. This mod will not only help get A LOT more of your hp from teh crank to the wheels, but the lightened weight of the flywheel will make your car rev quicker and pull a hell of a lot harder :)
As for the DP. We and DN Perf. are in the process of making a polished mandrel bent n/a federal DP right now. It should be done in about 2 weeks. I am working on putting a GB together, so if anyone would be interested please post here or email me at Ty@speedfactor.net. The DP WILL NOT eliminate the cat, but a test pipe should be available soon as well. The normal price will be $299.99 plus shipping, but I am hoping to be able to do the GB at $250-$260 plus shipping.
Finally, would would like to invite all of you to check out out suggested staged upgrades for the N/A 3S on our site www.speedfactor.net
Thanks everyone and I hope this helps,
Ty

I will definately be purchasing that dp from you greedy if it's cheaper than the others :D Sign me up for that. And about the rps stage 2, do you guys have any hard numbers at the track or dyno? oh and about the dp, it will bolt on just fine to my already existing test pipe, correct?

Yes sir, the DP wil be a direct bolt on, except it will have teh mandrel Y shape connection instead of the restrctive F shape like the stock DP. As for the RPS and fidanza, these will not give you HP increases from the actaul clutch itself, but what it does do is give you less drivetrain lose. As far as I know, clutches are only measured on how much Tq. they can hold, and I dont know of any dyno # on them. I can however post the Ft/Lb of Tq holding capiablity for the Stage 2 and stage 3 RPS. And for those that dont know how the new RPS names work, the Maxx series Street disc is the old Stage 2, and the Maxx series Sprung hub 6 puck disc is the old stage 3. I will look in my reference sheet and get the Tq # now for ya.
Thanks,
Ty

Ok, I got everything squared away with Don and if you guys want to do this GB for the N/A DP here's what I can do.
We need at least 10 people or 10 Dp's ;) The normal price is going to be $300
For 10+ people I can do them at $255 plus shipping. I am thinking $10 shipping should cover everything. So Say $265 Shipped vs $310 shipped.
I will also post this in the GB section of the forum and I will post it on 3SI too. I dont see a problem getting 10 people for this GB. The pipes should be done in about 2-3 weeks, so I will have a pic them, but you can look at the other DN Perf DP's on teh site to get an idea of what Don's quality of work is like. TOP OF THE LINE!!!!!!
Lets put this one together guys,

Here are some real hp numbers from some of the mods listed above :).
Stock 167 hp to the wheels (DOHC)
K&N FIPK and Borla catback Exhaust... 167.5 fwhp
Add a S-AFC....169 fwhp
Add a Fidanza flywheel, UDP, and ACT 2100 street clutch... 184 fwhp
We are working on getting some more hard core dyno numbers for you guys to know exactly what does what, but you'll have to be patient... they dyno time isn't all that cheap ;).
Hopefully some new dyno numbers will be with the new GZP ported heads with oversized SS valves and dual valve springs :).
Look for some dyno numbers for our TT kit coming later this month as well.

So you only gained 2 hp with a K&N, Borla cat-back and S-AFC Hans? That sucks dude. You sure there wasn't something wrong? Was that on Mikes car?
Gabe: Did you sign up for the GB on 3SI? We only have 5 more left. I can only do 20 this time around. Just an FYI.

There was nothing wrong with the car... it was my car that we did the initial dyno testing on. Of course I didn't do the AFC settings at that time.
The addition of the flywheel, UDP, and whatever else was done on Mike's car. I believe we did get 4 fwhp out of Mike's car with dyno tuning and me doing the AFC settings.
Both dyno sessions were using DynoJet dyno's although they were at 2 different locations.

I am copying this thread over here. This was originally posted by Yogurt! at 3SI.org but it seems that thread has been diluted. This is probably one of the best breakdowns I have ever seen. Great Job Yogurt!
"came to my attention in another thread that some hp gains are outrageous. and i want to set things straight. and give a little N/A "timeline" of how to BPU and BPU+etc your N/A all these are from experiences of myself, and things ive observed on the board.
drew is our "special boy" so dont go thinkin youre tearin up the track on half a bpu like he does! god bless that kid.
anyway. here it is. in YOGURT format.
here is how to CORRECTLY BPU your N/A
INTAKE, good for about 1hp to the ground, BUT it helps with other mods. get one off ebay, dont pay no 180 bucks like my sucka ass did for the fipk. you can get them for about 40 dollars. same shit.
UNDERDRIVE pulley, good for about 8-10, dont listen to fags who say its gonna break you engine. HORSE SHIT, ( id look into 3sx ones they dont underdrive as much thus keeping your lights nice n bright)
TESTPIPE, i sell these. this mod is good for about 7-8 hp, but further more it will allow you to pull all the way to redline, instead of falling off the hP table at 6800.
CUSTOM exhaust. i sell these for 425 shipped. your exhaust note changes noticeably, and your car will pull a bit harder to redline. helps top end emmensly. look around. if you want top line shit. borla makes a great system, as does DNP.
AT THIS POINT YOU ARE MAKING about 245 hp. and your car will feel very strong. and SHOULD run about 14.7-5 depending on driver.
other mods to consider highly.
DOWNPIPE, either dnp or 3sx depending on which emmission car you have. this mod is good for a reported 13hp at the wheels.
300 bucks, and your exhaust note changes CONSIDERABLY at 4k rpm.this is where youll get some nice gains from the air filter.
SOLID MOTOR MOUNTS, these keep the engine nailed to the car, and eliminates MOST of wheel hop, 3sx.
FIDANZA flywheel, nice n rev happy, added about 1mph on drews mph drag racing.expensive, along with this you should change the clutch to stage 3, trust me, stage 2 sucks, and the flyweel is a great compliment. DO IT YOURSELF ITS FUN.
TWIN TURBO FUEL PUMP, bolts right in, and keeps your fuel pressure NICE. youre gonna need this for the next modification
NITROUS OXIDE, go with a wet shot. i have dry and it blows. but now you will realize the power of the fuel pump. no engine going boom is worth 100 bucks dont you think? get a used nos kit. its cost effective.
SAFC to tune the nitro, and fuel. nice gadget to have. get the af gauge with it. requires mostly dyno tuning. but if you blue wire mod it you can do it... YOURSELF.
CAMGEARS, HOLY EXPENSIVE, and they look nice, they add about 8-10 butt dyno hp. tough to install. fidanza makes a nice set.
at this point you have just about EVERYTHING you can buy for the N/A. only thing im missing is the flywheel. you should be making about 270 N/A hp and 350 hp with the juice.
this point you run between 14.5 and 13.9
you wanna keep goin?
Quaife LSD, no torque steer anymore, and your 60ft times should be sub 2s.
DONT BOTHER PORTING AND POLISHING. the heads flow way too good. DONT WASTE MONEY.
BORED OUT THROTTLE BODY, bout 200 bucks depending where ya get it. phantom racing sells them i think. best bet would be to take the plenum and TB to a machine shop tell them to bore the plenum hole too. and see what they tell you. im looking into this myself. phantom claims 7 hp.
at this point youre making 275/280NA hp, without juice, and 350-370hp with it, ALSO you have the means to put it to the ground.
at this point you should run 14.3-13.xx NOONE HAS BEEN HERE BEFORE.
AND THE ULTIMATE NA MODIFICATION
TWIN TURBO CONVERSION. from, a roll NOTHING will touch you.
there are those running 13.2s with SLICKS fwd
ty should be in the 12s with his new quaife. the quaife is A MUST for this undertaking. should cost between 2 and 8 k depending on what you get, what method you use, who does it, and how many NEW parts you buy.
OTHER MODS I HIGHLY RECCOMEND,
pull the blue wire behind the stereo, no more beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.
LIFTERS, GET THESE! your car will NEVER tick again.
lower the car. wheel gap is ugly. you can fit hondas in there.
all these claims are made to the best of my knowledge, note you may or maynot see same results. EVERY car is different.
but i hope this helps a bit."

Thanks to Hans Im getting just under 300hp & 300tq to the tires with a 75 shot!
Whats that to the crank? Its like 28% loss right?
Racer 007

I think the 25 - 28% loss is actually for the AWD. N/A's have more of around a 15% loss due to FWD.

Some HP but not a lot. The drag on the engine and the weight reduction. A guestimate would be 5 to 7 HP.
