Go to dynamic racing and start at stage 1. That is the steps you want to build from. This has been tested and you will be better off doing it in those stages than trying to do it on your own.

In 1998 the Base model is a SOHC. - You have a 3.0Liter v6 SOHC 12-Valve Engine. 161hp @ 5500 RPMS and 185 lbs of toruqe @ 4000rpms. Front Wheel drive, and either 5 speed manual, or 4 speed auto. ~ On your car.. you can do slight modifications to make it quick. but If I were you, I would buy Decals. like buy the vr4 decal from a car-make-model in like a junk yard or something, and put it on ur car. Then put Twin Turbo on both sides behind drivers windows. ~ and then put the money into making it look real nice.. ~ people will love your car. just never pop the hood ;) ` and also.. never race.. :) ~

The 2K that you have to spend will get you a little power gains. Try to go for the Stage 1 upgrade and feel how that helps. If you like it, go for the Stage 2. Not much more in alot of power without NOS

Make sure you get that Synthetic High Performance Blinker Fluid also, man I got that and it gave me at least 40HP to the wheel. I have dyno sheets to prove it if u wanna see. WHOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAA NELLY!!!!!!!!!:D

The short throw shifter should put you in the high 8's in the 1/4 as well.:D

I hate to disagree with all of you but the base model (SOHC) does have a supercharger available for it. I believe Knight makes it.
That will put you in the same area as a DOHC non-turbo power wise. I believe they also run in the $3000 range so it might be a bit out of your range as you have stated.
There are definitely mods that you can do for it but you would be fairly hard pressed to actually get a lot of power out of it without going the Supercharger route.

If you read his first post, he said he had a max of $2000.00. The Knights supercharger is close to $4000. I posted the staged upgrades but with $2k, there is not alot of performance items out there that will make high HP numbers.

I went out and bought some Synthetic High Performance Blinker Fluid, and I put on my Carbon Fiber floor mats. It reduced the weight by about 849lbs.. and now i have about 375hp. I am runnin low 8's. Also, Its kinda pricy, but you can buy Synthetic High Performance Tire Fluid and it increases the rotations per second at the tire. .. if u feel brave poor a table spoon of Synthetic High Performance Sand in your gas tank.. ask the Towel Heads in Afgan.. it increases HP. ~ Last note.. all new Steel Tires for sale at www.steeltires.com ~ pretty cool.. not a smooth ride. but you got ur BLING BLING ~

If you want weight reduction remove the following:
Brake Pads
Gas Lines
Gas Tank
Rotors
Chrome Rims
Axles (rear)
Oil Pump
And don't use oil.. use water..
Make sure you race Downhill with a pushing start.. ~ :)

In attempting to modify a SOHC, the power gains are very minimal. It may be just as easy to sell it and buy a DOHC or VR4. It depends on what you are looking for. High power will never be achieved with the SOHC. The car is pretty but not much in the way of a powerhouse.

SLO3KGT, are you looking for high performance or just a little more performance?

The headers I found claim to add 33.6 whp. Thats for $650.00 at www.aftermarketsuperstore.com/
Also custom catback at your local exhaust shop. Got my 3" cat back no muffler for $110. Also the open element air filter does wonders for our car. Do you have the atx or 5 speed? If atx their is a group buy on 3si.org for a preformance shift kit. under $75 is all we have on the price now.
5 speed fidanza fly wheel for $405 at
short shifter $99
www.3kgtmotorsports.com/index.php?page=Fly
Also the lightened crank pulley for $139 at
www.3sxperformance.com/engine.asp
Their is also a Mas air flow translater for $199
Plus you buy a LS1 MAF listed at $105.21
http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/
Also you can get a regrind on your cams for $220

Get the items and you should have decent power out of your SOHC. If you are looking to really just take down
hondas and the likes this should work on most of them.
Also look a suspension and strut tower bars to really make your car fun in the corners. Just think of your car as a challenge to modify. All of the trails are relatively new for SOHC mods. They are coming more now than ever. I think we will make a very valuable part of the 3si world based on sheer numbers and availabiity. Which is what set of the whole honda rice shit. CHEAP/EASILY FOUND/ AND FUN
Good luck and e-mail me if you got any ?'s.For atx = 1388.21 + shipping and the custom exhaust.
5 speed = 18172.21 plus shipping and the custom exhaust

On top of that you can do the resonator removal mod.
Which is free. Doest give serious gains but does help.
And if you have a manual you can do a ram air mod.
Doesnt help much other than bringing cold air to the filter. If you really get goin it does have its other advantages by forcing a little more air to the filter.
That on can be done real cheap and in your drive way.
Multiple ways on that. just search ram air on the forums.
