Hey everyone, i just bought a 1994 3000GT VR-4 back in Dec, so i'm still new at a lot of this stuff.

I've tried searching for an answer, but i havent found it yet. My question is, has anyone tried putting an aftermarket boost gauge in the spot the stock one is in? From what i can tell its a 52mm gauge.

The other question is, does anyone have recommendations for boost gauges. Should i go with something like Apexi which are over $100, or could I get by with lesser known brands for less money. I dont have any mods in it except a K&N filter, but one day i will want to add more.

I also wanted to compare some gas mileages from other people. When i first got it, i was getting around 11-12 mpg (which i still get when driving "aggressively"). Average, now i think is like 14-15 mpg, and i get 18mpg highway. I was wondering if this is average or not for the car. I wasnt expecting great mileage from this car anyway, but i wasnt sure if it was going to be that low. Gas can put a pretty big dent in the wallet, hehe. But having said that, this car is so much fun to drive.

I just bought a Greddy B.C. You can replace the stock one with an aftermarket. You might have to take the whole dash off to do that though. There is another way i THINK by going through the glove compartment but I am not familiar with it. Also those numbers for gas milage seem a bit low. I usually average 17-18 in the city and normal driving, and more on the highways.

You can put in an aftermarket gauge in the stock location. It is a PITA but possible. The easiest way to do this is through the passenger side airbag. There is directions on 3SI.com . Also, you have to be careful with the airbag.

Greddy boost gauge with memory is good.

www.daveblack.net has a great site and one of the things he has is an illustrated and detailed dash removal page. In addition he has a link to the center gauge removal link http://www.daveblack.net/asp/CenterGaugeRemoval.asp

Let me warn you about something...

The stock 3 gauges come in a pod assy, they are NOT individual gauges that you can replace one at a time...

AND...The amount of work to get them out really isn't worth it.
Just get an autometer single A-pillar pod for about $20 and you're done.

If you do go all out later on mods, you can always do it then...

On Gauges:

Pretty much all the boost gauges you can buy from $30 -$100 will be within a pound of each other, maybe high or maybe low... Get whatever looks good to you at a price you can live with.

The first thing to do when you get it in, is to find out how much it's reading when your car is stock.

Take it on nice empty stretch of highway, get it into third gear at about 2500rpm and floor it while keeping an eye on the max reading you get...

For your stock 94 you should see 12lbs. of boost max which will drop off quickly to around 10lbs...

If your boost gauge reads 12lbs peak, then you have one that is spot on. If it reads 1 or 2 lbs. low or high just note the difference and always remember what the correct number really is... This'll come in handy when you do get some more mods and want to max out your boost at 14...

MAX OUT BOOST AT 14? I want to max out at 22.
I think that he was talking about stock turbos and "maxing them out" with regards to effeciency at 14-15 lbs, not usre though.
In regards to the gas mileage issue, I get about 17-18 in town, with quite a few romps on it and mostly "grandma driving", I get about 22-24 on the highway driving about 75-85.
Cingratulations on the car!!! I know when I got mine I fell instantly in love.
